Darley only has 4 teeth in her mouth and I have used a dog tooth brush, a wash cloth, a human tooth brush, breath spray, several different dog toothpastes, the stuff you put in their water, laser treatments..... the list goes on and on.
She had a dental late October and her breath after that was great!!! But now, it is back to being very stinky again no matter how much I clean her mouth. My vet offers Darley a major discount on dentals because she only has 4 teeth but at this rate, she will be getting a dental 4 times a year. Eeep!!!
Any suggestions? _________________ Traci and her crew

"Death breath" Good one.
Maybe it's her food? _________________ Pam |

Is it actually her teeth? I've read on greytalk that some seem to think that the bad breath smell could be coming from their stomachs. I've read that some give their dogs an acid reducer and it cures the bad breath. Of course if her teeth are dirty then that may not be the case. _________________ Jeanne! Mama to one great hound! Yes....I would wonder if it's actually her teeth.
However, we had a dog with teeth so bad, this gross "fuzz" would grow on them and by the end of the day they'd be gross again...he was brushed twice a day. When he came to us at 10 he only had his canine's forward left in his head. By they time he went to the Bridge, they were all gone They were just that bad. His daughter, who we also own, has got the same bad teeth. Her brother Rocky, doesn't. Go figure.
Anyhoo...if she only has four teeth left and it IS her teeth causing the problem (odor often indicates bacterial growth), it may be worth it to talk to your vet about just pulling those final four teeth in her next dental. I'd rather do that than have a dog have multiple/frequent dentals just to keep a few teeth that don't really make much of a difference in quality of life anyway, most likely. _________________ Living the greyt life: www.worldofgrey.com

I don't really think it is her teeth, just her mouth/gums. I have talked to the vet and they suggest the laser treatments but they don't really help the breath (it does help her teeth though).
I have heard some bad things about removing the canines... because they are so deep and close to the sinuses, dogs have suffered from constant nasal drip. She has enough dripping already!
I would rather not remove the teeth if I don't have to. They are not in the worst shape and I don't think they are causing her any pain.
I guess I could clean her mouth more frequently. The other greys get their teeth brushed at least every other day so maybe cleaning Darley's mouth once or twice a day will help the bad breath. I will try that!

I agree there could be something non mouth related to the bad breath. Our vet (Dr. Bowman, Bowman Animal Hospital in Raleigh and who has had greyhounds) does Eastern, Western, and holistic medicine and has always smelled our pets breath as part of their exam. Greyhounds are new to us but she has prescribed supplements for one of cats with bad breath as she said it was indicative of a different digestive issue. _________________ Baci's Staff

The extra brushing helped.... so I am guessing it was mouth related. _________________ Traci and her crew

Can your dog have too many dentals? Darley's breath got better with the extra brushings but I took her today to get another dental. Her last one was in October (6 months ago). She only has 4 teeth and although I brush them, they are in bad shape. I just don't want those to have to be removed too!
Just curious..... what kind of dog toothpaste does everyone use? _________________ Traci and her crew

The biggest problem with repeated dentals is repeated exposure to being anesthetized. If she's got such bad mouth problems, though, it's entirely possible that repeated dentals are less dangerous than the mouth infections that might otherwise result.
I tend to use Petrodex or CET. _________________ Josquin the cat

They didn't put her under last time but they did this time. Since she only has 4 teeth, I told them not to the last time. She did well but they said she was pretty uncomfortable and I felt bad about that so I told them it was OK to put her under this time.
Now her breath is WONDERFUL!!! (well, as good as dog breath can get anyway) _________________ Traci and her crew
